Lead Engineer

Job description

A global engineering advisory firm with a strong presence in Germany is seeking a Lead Engineer to drive the planning and execution of high-voltage substation projects across Germany and Europe. With nearly 20,000 employees worldwide, the company offers both the stability of a global organisation and the opportunity to work on technically challenging projects with visibility across international markets.

The Role

You will take responsibility for primary substation planning, leading a small team of junior engineers while coordinating closely with grid operators and clients. This is a highly technical and client-facing role, blending engineering expertise with leadership, mentoring, and project oversight.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Lead the engineering design of high-voltage substations, ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory requirements

  • Mentor and guide junior engineers and non-German-speaking team members, building a capable and efficient team

  • Act as the main technical interface with grid operators, ensuring smooth coordination throughout the project lifecycle

  • Support project execution while maintaining visibility into construction and operational requirements

  • Apply project management skills to organise tasks, timelines, and technical deliverables

  • Participate in international opportunities where desired, including global assignments or temporary project deployments

Your Background

  • Significant experience in primary substation design, preferably within engineering consultancies, OEMs, or grid operators

  • Strong technical expertise coupled with the ability to communicate effectively with clients

  • Proven leadership and mentoring experience for junior engineers

  • C1-level German is required

  • Degree is not essential – candidates with a technical qualification (Techniker, apprenticeship plus training) are also considered

  • Ability to work independently while being part of a collaborative, multinational team

  • Willingness to spend some time in-office to support and train the team

Why Join?
  • Lead complex, high-voltage substation projects with international exposure

  • Mentor and develop a junior engineering team, shaping the next generation of technical talent

  • Flexible, hybrid working with offices in Hamburg, Berlin, and Zurich

  • Access to a global network and potential international career opportunities

  • Work with a company that combines technical excellence with global scale
