BESS Lead Engineer
Job description
TGRC has partnered with a leading multinational conglomerate specialising in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC), with a strong presence across infrastructure, energy, power, and heavy engineering, delivering large-scale, complex projects globally.
Job Summary:
The BESS Lead Engineer will be responsible for the technical leadership, engineering design, and delivery of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects across utility-scale and hybrid renewable energy developments. The role involves leading system design, performing technical studies, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring compliance with technical, safety, and quality standards while delivering cost-optimised and reliable energy storage solutions.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead the engineering design and delivery of BESS projects, covering battery chemistry, duty cycling, performance metrics (round-trip efficiency, cycle life), safety, and inverter systems.
Design and optimise BESS solutions for efficiency, reliability, and lifecycle performance.
Perform and review system studies where required, including integration with MV/HV substations.
Develop and review control logics, simulations, and performance models using tools such as MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, and HOMER.
Design battery systems, inverters, DC/DC converters, and hybrid renewable systems (Solar PV, Wind, BESS).
Review panel architecture, thermal management, ventilation, and temperature rise calculations.
Provide technical leadership on inverter operating modes (VAR, PF, grid-support functions, etc.).
Conduct root cause analysis and act as a solution provider for technical challenges.
Drive value engineering initiatives and translate concepts into cost-optimised, high-performance designs.
Prepare and review technical specifications, including tender documentation and bid evaluations.
Conduct engineering reviews, quality checks, and approvals of drawings, reports, and deliverables.
Support installation and commissioning activities during the construction phase as required.
Prepare FAT specifications, test plans, and review and interpret test results.
Ensure full compliance with quality, H&S, and Design Management procedures.
Coordinate daily with internal design teams (civil, instrumentation, CAD) and external stakeholders.
Manage inputs from other departments and third parties, including geotechnical, environmental, and transport teams.
Ensure timely delivery of all design outputs in line with client requirements and technical specifications.
Act as a technical point of contact with vendors and clients throughout the design lifecycle.
Key Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
8–12 years of experience in BESS, energy storage, or renewable energy project engineering.
Proven experience delivering energy storage projects within an engineering or consulting environment.
Strong knowledge of battery technologies, inverter systems, hybrid energy systems, and grid integration.
Hands-on experience with MATLAB/Simulink, ETAP, and related simulation tools.
Solid understanding of control logic development, system modelling, and performance analysis.
Experience with MV/HV substation integration and system protection philosophies.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and stakeholder coordination skills.
