Job description

​The Green Recruitment Company are currently retained by a Renewable Developer who is looking for a Head of Grid to join their UK office. The team have a 6GW pipeline with multiple projects being ready for construction in the next 24 months.

The business is paying a basic salary + bonus + LTIP

The role:

We are in search of a seasoned grid expert to refine our in-house grid targeting strategy. This role involves employing a comprehensive understanding of broader network dynamics, assessing the compatibility of development activities, and offering detailed analyses to guide our teams. The Head of Grid will collaborate with senior managers, providing technical input and oversight throughout all stages of project development.

Beyond strategy development, the Head of Grid will supervise our grid connection management processes, lead technical due diligence (grid aspects) on potential acquisitions, and stay abreast of industry changes affecting our long-term performance.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Formulating and evolving our in-house grid targeting strategy.

  • Overseeing all grid development processes.

  • Leading negotiations for Grid Offers, covering pricing, milestones, and payments.

  • Serving as the primary contact for all network utilities, both distribution and transmission.

  • Managing ICP tender and selection processes, defining scopes of work, and reviewing responses.

  • Collaborating with the team to assess grid suitability for early-stage projects.

  • Establishing and maintaining relationships with leading ICPs.

  • Providing grid/connection technical support during asset construction.

  • Developing and managing in-house grid technical standards and tools.

  • Conducting technical due diligence on grid and connection aspects for project acquisitions and disposals.

Required Experience:

  • Over 10 years of experience in developing and constructing medium to large-scale (10-50 MW+) power generation projects, ideally in Solar PV and utility-scale batteries.

  • Expertise in sourcing grid capacity, resolving grid challenges, and addressing grid connection issues or delays.

  • Profound understanding of grid connection policies and regulations, including grid acceleration and queue management processes.

  • Well-established in the electrical network sector, actively engaged with organizations like the ENA.

  • Strong connections to key industry players, iDNOs, and DNOs.

  • Familiarity with ICP design and construction, including contract negotiation.

  • Strong commercial acumen and a proven track record in managing grid offer and connection agreement processes.

  • Electrical Engineering or a similar university degree supplemented by industry experience.

  • Knowledge of market-standard construction and equipment costs, with a focus on grid connections.

  • Background in technical consulting, network utility, or project development.

  • Thorough knowledge of technical best practices for international and UK-based connection work.

  • Previous experience conducting due diligence for potential project acquisitions, particularly focusing on grid connection risks.

  • Demonstrated leadership skills.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office IT software, including presentation tools and CRM systems.

  • Ability to deliver complex tasks within tight timelines.

  • A self-starter who is comfortable working within a small and agile team.

  • High technical competence, specifically as a power engineer.

  • Excellent reporting and presentation skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships with external parties.

  • Ability to represent the business at external grid-related events and meetings.
