Job description

​We are working with the Research department of a leading energy analytics organization, who are seeking a Senior Associate for their Australian energy analysis team in Sydney. The role involves pivotal contributions to critical electricity market analysis guiding client decisions amid the energy transition, encompassing issue identification, hypothesis formulation, data analysis, report synthesis, and stakeholder presentations. The Senior Associate's responsibilities include fostering team growth, providing top-tier market analysis, and contributing insights globally, within a small yet influential power market expert team, supported by advanced modeling and software. Ideal candidates will combine technical prowess, market acumen, and a proven leadership record in collaborative environments.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the research report development process from inception to client presentation, under the guidance of senior leadership in the APAC team.

  2. Stay informed about policy, market, and technological advancements and leverage this knowledge to offer data-driven insights to clients regarding the potential evolution of Australian power markets.

  3. Represent the organization at external events as a recognized authority in this dynamic market, contributing to thought leadership, analysis, and subscription product enhancements.

  4. Play a pivotal role in product delivery and development, as well as client engagement, which includes identifying client requirements and continually enhancing the services provided.

  5. Develop analysis related to the energy transition for both public and private sector clients and present these insights in client meetings and presentations.

  6. Collaborate on the development of consistent forecasts across the entire organization, working with various teams and offices within the company as well as independently.

The Senior Associate will report to the Head of Research and be part of Aurora's broader Research and Publications team. This managerial position will involve supervising several early-career analysts.

Qualifications:

Required attributes:

  • A minimum of 3 – 4 years of experience in a reputable consultancy, energy company, financial services firm, or knowledge-focused institution.

  • A first-class or high second-class university degree.

  • Demonstrated success in project and process management in team-oriented settings.

  • Proven ability to derive insights from complex quantitative data and information.

  • Effective communication skills suitable for both technical and non-technical audiences.

  • A self-starting and entrepreneurial mindset, with a desire to contribute to business growth.

  • The capacity to mentor junior colleagues to enhance their skills.

  • Proficiency in Excel and competence or interest in common programming languages like Python or R.

Desirable attributes:

  • Demonstrated success in client-facing roles.

  • Knowledge of key financial metrics and economic principles (NPV, IRR, DCF).

  • Competence in advanced data analytics (e.g., Python, R, Matlab, Advanced Excel).

  • Previous experience working on energy projects, particularly within the Australian context.

  • A relevant Master's degree or PhD.

  • Proficiency in languages other than English.
