Land Manager
Job description
We are seeking a highly motivated Land Manager to lead utility-scale solar and energy storage land acquisition efforts, focusing on the MISO territories. This position offers an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in expanding our renewable energy portfolio while maintaining positive relationships with landowners and ensuring all necessary land agreements are in place for successful project execution. The ideal candidate will have experience collaborating with development teams to ensure that land acquisition supports project timelines and requirements. As part of the team, you will contribute to the rapid growth of our solar and energy storage projects and support the company’s mission to drive sustainable energy development.
The position reports directly to the Vice President.
Key Responsibilities
Lead land acquisition efforts for utility-scale solar and energy storage projects in MISO territories.
Negotiate and secure land rights (letters of intent, land lease agreements, purchase options, easements, rights-of-way).
Develop and maintain long-term relationships with landowners, guiding them through the development process.
Collaborate with the Development and Legal team to ensure timely acquisition of land and resolve title issues.
Work with landowners to assess site conditions, development constraints, access, and other factors that affect project layout and installation.
Conduct market research to determine fair lease/purchase prices and negotiate terms.
Manage the land acquisition database and provide regular updates to stakeholders.
Educate and engage landowners regarding renewable energy projects.
Support the permitting process by securing necessary landowner approvals.
Build and sustain relationships with community members and local governments, working with project permitters to obtain regulatory approvals for land-related issues, such as right-of-way and access easements.
Support title curative efforts (in getting mineral right waivers, subordination agreements, affidavits, etc.) in consultation with the Development team.
Contribute to internal decision-making on land opportunities and strategies, prioritizing outreach efforts.
Stay informed about renewable energy opportunities in the U.S. and industry trends that impact the competitiveness of solar and renewable development.
Perform other duties as required.
Qualifications
2+ years of experience in land origination and negotiations, preferably in utility-scale solar, renewable energy, or real estate development (MISO region residency required).
Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust and educate landowners.
In-depth knowledge of land acquisition processes, easement negotiations, and legal principles (title, deeds, leases, easements).
Proficiency in mapping software (Google Earth), MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Strong negotiation, conflict resolution, and time management abilities.
Ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines and work autonomously.
Experience with public speaking, cold calling, and negotiating with landowners and community representatives.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to resolve complex issues at both the project and global levels.
Understanding of land use constraints with respect to zoning, environmental, and geotechnical issues.
