Job description
Leadership
Develop and promote a best-in-class EHS culture.
Set strategic direction and vision for the EHS function aligned with broader organizational objectives.
Establish goals and performance metrics for EHS.
Represent EHS in leadership decisions, manage cross-departmental challenges, and communicate updates to the team.
Manage department budgets and staffing decisions.
Design workflows, standard operating procedures, and accountability measures.
Continuously improve departmental capability.
Handle high-risk, complex decisions with escalation as needed.
Support contract negotiations related to safety, training, and environmental terms.
Represent EHS in business development efforts including client presentations, RFP responses, site visits, and industry engagements.
EHS Specific Responsibilities
Manage and enhance company-wide EHS initiatives.
Mentor safety committee members, employees, and subcontractors.
Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and other federal, state, and local regulations via site visits and evolving safety programs.
Maintain current practices per regulatory changes and maintain relationships with authorities as needed.
Develop and administer EHS training programs and records.
Ensure compliance with both regulatory and client-specific EHS requirements.
Maintain accountability for:
Safety metric reporting (OSHA 300, DART, EMR, etc.)
Incident investigation and response, including root cause analysis
EHS documentation management
Project-specific safety and environmental plan development
Onsite safety inspections and staffing
Safety inventory management
Regulatory stormwater compliance (SWPPP)
Serve as the main contact for external stakeholders regarding EHS matters.
Lead or delegate incident response coordination and develop a response framework.
Promote a culture of transparency and open communication in EHS.
Oversee subcontractor EHS vetting and approval.
Maintain employee certifications and assist in return-to-work processes.
Lead the development of the Environmental Management System (EMS).
Guide project-level stormwater and spill prevention efforts.
Maintain industrial hygiene programs.
Advise other business units on EHS matters.
Manage hazardous waste and transportation compliance (RCRA, DOT), including lab testing protocols and stakeholder coordination.
Skills and Experience
Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred in a related field (e.g., Occupational Safety, Environmental Management).
Minimum 10 years’ experience in construction-related EHS leadership roles.
Relevant certifications such as CSP or CHST required.
Deep knowledge of OSHA and EPA standards.
Proven leadership experience in a construction setting.
Strong communication, organizational, and training skills.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Certifications in erosion/sediment or stormwater management from applicable state agencies are a plus.
Working Conditions
Requires local travel, primarily day trips by car.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be needed.
Based in a central office location with site visits as necessary.
Physical Requirements
Fast-paced office environment.
Must be able to lift at least 40 pounds.
Capable of navigating job sites for safety inspections.
