Job description

The Organisation:

The Green Recruitment Company is representing a leading global contractor with expertise across multiple sectors, most notably within the global construction sector in their search for a Senior Sustainability Manager. Due to the nature of the organisation, the role offers excellent progression opportunities and international scope. The Senior Sustainability Advisor will work with the project team on managing and meeting the sustainability targets. The work location will be Glasgow.

The Role:

The Sustainability Manager will have the responsibilities of day-to-day environmental management of the site, meeting sustainability assessment targets (BREEAM, Code for Sustainable Homes and LEED) and implementing measures to meet sustainability targets. The Sustainability Advisor will:

  • Provide support on meeting project environmental and sustainability targets related to building environmental assessments such as BREEAM, Code for Sustainability Homes and LEED
  • Provide project support on meeting environmental objectives and policy targets
  • Implement the ISO 14001 environmental management system on projects
  • Liaise with project stakeholders who may be affected by environmental issues
  • Provide guidance and input into various elements of the Sustainability Plan:
  • Assist in development of waste management strategies and plans
  • Reporting and recording
  • Site set up
  • Draw up suitable contracts
  • Oversee the provision of an environmental training program
  • Monitor and review the environmental performance of contractors.

Person Specification:

  • A university degree in environmental studies, engineering, or similar discipline
  • A postgraduate degree in a relevant topic (desirable but not essential)
  • Experience in BREEAM or Code for Sustainable Homes in the UK construction sector
  • A good understanding of UK and European legislation and regulatory framework, with a particular focus on Scottish contexts
  • A good understanding of sustainability in the built environment
  • An understanding of management systems such as ISO14001 and experience with external certification bodies (internal auditor training will be provided if required)
  • Experience preparing legal documents such as permit and licence applications
  • Experience of controlling budgets
  • Experience of negotiating with external organisations and regulatory authorities
  • A practical approach to problem solving
  • Analytical skills and competence in demonstrating the ROI of sustainability initiatives
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively influence all levels of the business
  • Membership (or working towards membership) of relevant professional bodies such as the IEMA
  • A CSCS card (this is desirable, however, training will be provided)
