Job description

Business:

Leading the R&D function of one of the largest anaerobic digestion businesses in the UK. reporting to the head of technical working to ensure the business remains at the forefront of the industry. Working in collaboration with senior management to ensure the delivery of the businesses 5 year plan.

Purpose:

Reporting to the Head of Technical, the Research & Development Leader will be responsible for overseeing all Research and Development initiatives and projects. They will be directly responsible for the leadership & management of the Research & Development Team, and indirect leadership of the Technical Development and Process Development teams. As part of succession planning within the Technical Team, the Research & Development Leader will undergo professional development to enable transition into the Head of Technical role in future.

Duties:

- Responsible for research, planning, and implementing new programmes and protocols and overseeing the development of new products and processes to improve efficiencies and ensure the business remains a leader in our field.

- Engage closely with Business Development and the Government Affairs & Development Director to ensure support for commercial goals (techno-economic analysis of projects and solutions).

- Manage research & development on behalf of the business and ensure expertise and knowledge is used to guide the Head of Technical and wider Leadership Team in decisions around Technical and R&D

- As directed by the Head of Technical, deliver the strategy for the R&D Team in line with the company’s vision and 5-year plan.

- Drive accountability, consistency, quality, and process standardization across all phases of research and development.

- Ensure the professional development and training of those within the Team.

- Provide regular reports and liaise with key stakeholders on R&D activities and operational improvement initiatives. All reports issued in a timely manner, with clear, concise recommendations/conclusions.

- Lead on Digestate Development Projects, including the production of novel products and support the Business Development team in delivering such new products to a commercial market.

- Plan and develop facilities to allow the testing of new feedstocks and processes at lab and pilot scale.

- Prepare and manage team budget.

- Spearhead engagements with internal and external stakeholders on technical innovation and development.

- Prepare management and board reports as and when required, including technical and commercial updates on Technical Team projects.

- Drive accountability, consistency, quality, and process standardization across all phases of research and development.

- Champion health & safety and environmental standards, ensure complete compliance with all regulatory requirements including but not limited to; SEPA, Ofgem, SGN and HSE guidelines.
