Africa Director

Location: Johannesburg, South Africa

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated leadership on strategic business development, including a strong track record of developing successful proposals ideally within a management consultancy.

  • Strong relevant networks in government and business across Sub-Saharan Africa

  • Experience of team leadership and line management

  • Experience of effective business leadership and financial management

  • Experience of communicating effectively in writing and speech at Director level for senior government and business audiences

  • Experience of running projects, delivering high quality outputs and managing budgets effectively

  • Masters’ level degree educated (or equivalent)

  • Fluency in English is essential, French and Portuguese is desirable but not essential.

  • Experience in contract negotiation and management is desirable but not essential.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Business development (40%):

  • Initiate and develop business opportunities for the company in Africa that involve both carbon reductions and revenue generation, in line with the growth plan for the region.

  • Pre-position, bring forth, research, champion, write, manage and/or participate in client proposals, leveraging and working collaboratively with the company experts from our global network of offices and partner organisations.

  • Build strategic alliances with local and international stakeholders in Africa and establish and manage a comprehensive network of key partners and clients across the region.

  • Develop key large-scale, low-carbon programme opportunities in Africa that are based on our global expertise and local knowledge and network.

  • Represent the company across Africa by providing speeches, presentations and media interviews that explain what we do and market our work across the region.

Delivery (25%):

  • Provide direction and leadership for all of the company’s projects and programmes across Africa, working collaboratively with colleagues and partners.

  • Quality control deliverables and ensure that they meet or exceed client expectations.

  • Provide performance oversight across a portfolio of projects in Africa to ensure that the outputs are delivered on-time and within budget and contribute meaningfully to our mission.

  • Work alongside the company Africa’s Management Team to ensure the successful operations of the company’s Africa office and the delivery of these duties.

Strategy, team management and operations (25%):

  • Develop, agree and implement the strategy for the company in Africa, which will be signed-off by the company Board, and provide input to the company’s wider international strategy.

  • Lead the company office in Johannesburg ensuring that the office is a productive and happy place to work and that all team members are suitably supported and inspired in their roles.

  • Ensure effective coordination with other teams across the company, including delivery-focused business units and shared services, to ensure that the company Africa team is aligned with all internal procedures and bringing the best of the company to all client engagements.

  • Build out the team and oversee all recruitment into the office.

  • Oversee the development of quarterly and annual financial statements and reports to the Board.

  • Oversee The company Africa’s cash flow, including by keeping the monthly cashflow analysis updated, and ensuring projects are delivered profitably and invoiced on time.

  • Ensure that the office and team comply with the relevant accounting and legal regulations. Lead on health, safety and environment policies for all the company activities and employees across Africa. Ensure that the company policies including procurement, anti-bribery and personal conduct are followed.

Knowledge management and learning (10%):

  • Monitor the development of low carbon policy, technologies and market trends across Africa to understand market potential and to develop new capabilities to deliver impact.

  • Keep track of policy news, publications and events on relevant topics including corporate sustainability, GHG accounting, green finance, carbon pricing, energy transition (covering energy efficiency, renewable energy and energy systems), agriculture and sustainable transport

  • Keep up to date with the development of new propositions and initiatives across the rest of the company, and ensure that the office’s knowledge management systems are effective
