Head of Site Supervision - HV Substations
Job description
A leading global engineering organisation is seeking an experienced Head of Site Supervisor to lead the installation and commissioning of power transformers across the UK and Europe.
This is a senior, field-based leadership role responsible for overseeing complex transformer installation projects from mobilisation through to commissioning readiness. The successful candidate will act as the organisation’s principal on-site authority, working closely with project management teams, clients, principal contractors, and subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, efficiently, and to the highest quality standards.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership and Team Development
Provide functional and operational leadership to all site-based personnel across multiple projects
Lead the development of an in-house transformer installation team
Recruit, mentor, and develop Site Supervisors and installation technicians
Define competency frameworks, training programmes, and career development pathways
Promote a strong culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement
Site Coordination and Project Delivery
Oversee site activities for transformer installation projects from mobilisation to commissioning readiness
Support Project Managers with the implementation of project plans on site
Develop and manage installation schedules, short-interval planning, and look-ahead programmes
Coordinate daily activities between internal teams, subcontractors, suppliers, and client representatives
Manage site logistics including deliveries, plant, equipment, and temporary facilities
Provide regular progress updates and escalate risks or issues where necessary
Health, Safety and Compliance
Lead health, safety, and environmental performance across all active sites
Ensure compliance with CDM 2015 contractor duties and client site rules
Develop, review, and control Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS)
Conduct safety briefings, toolbox talks, and emergency readiness planning
Manage incident reporting, investigations, and corrective actions
Carry out site HSE inspections and audits
Quality Assurance
Ensure implementation of project Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs)
Lead quality monitoring across all site works
Manage snagging processes and drive resolution of quality issues
Maintain detailed documentation and quality records
Technical Oversight
Act as the primary on-site technical authority for transformer installation
Resolve installation challenges using strong engineering judgement
Interface with engineering teams to address technical queries
Coordinate commissioning readiness and support commissioning activities
Qualifications and Experience
Essential:
HNC/HND in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
Significant experience in power transformer installation and commissioning
Proven leadership experience managing site teams on major infrastructure projects
SMSTS or IOSH Managing Safely certification
Experience developing and implementing RAMS
CPCS Crane Supervisor (A62) or equivalent lifting supervision qualification
NGET or SPEN Competent Person certification
First Aid at Work and Working at Height certification
Full driving licence
Fluent English (written and spoken)
Preferred:
NGET authorisations (NSI 2, NSI 6, NSI 8, BESC)
SPEN certifications (COMP, APSA, APSS)
CPCS Slinger/Signaller certification
Temporary Works Supervisor/Coordinator certification
IPAF (MEWP) certification
Confined Space certification
