The Green Recruitment Company has been retained by a leader in the US battery storage sector in their search for an EVP, Commercial.
My client are a large-scale energy storage independent power producer with over 1GW of battery storage projects in operation across New York, New England, and Texas, with their development pipeline almost 10GW. The company has grown substantially over the past few years and now have around 100 employees across the US – a real mix of energy veterans, mid-career experts and young, ambitious talent.
Based in Houston the EVP, Commercial will spearhead commercial strategy for storage and storage plus assets, both for the growing operational battery fleet and the extensive development pipeline.
This role requires an energy market expert with extensive background in power marketing, contract origination & structuring (short, medium, long term), leading offtake origination and negotiation (PPAs, hedges etc) and solid expertise in market fundamentals across the entire project lifecycle.
Minimum 15 years’ experience power commercial negotiations, ideally including energy storage. Must have deep market experience, and prior leadership experience in building and managing commercial teams; executive experience a plus.
The ideal candidate will be a senior professional from a well-regarded independent power producer with a track record of commercial origination, structuring and negotiation for renewable assets, ideally with storage expertise.

Key Responsibilities:
Lead the Commercial Plan
Possess a deep understanding of the commercial opportunities available for storage and storage + assets across the United States.
Develop the overall commercial plan for development and operational assets to align with existing and anticipated market demand and maximize revenue while enabling an efficient financing structure.
Work together with development and regulatory to ensure alignment between the development pipeline and commercialization opportunities.
Proactively identify opportunities and gaps within the development pipeline to bring forward commercial opportunities to support the firms business plan.
Contract Origination & Structuring
Identify and pursue commercial opportunities (short, medium and long-term) for operational and development-stage standalone storage and storage + projects across the United States (including CAISO, ERCOT, ISO-NE, NYISO, PJM, SPP, and WECC).
Utilize and build upon a deep network of utility and non-utility off-takers to gain market knowledge and identify commercial structures and BESS use cases that the firm can bring to the market.
Identify, develop and market contract structures and opportunities that will be acceptable to customers, internally, and other stakeholders.
Lead deal team to efficient and productive engagement in RFP processes.
Collaborate with full team to advance comprehensive risk assessment associated with all commercial opportunities.
Lead offtake agreement negotiations (tolls, power purchase agreements (PPAs), hedges, indexed energy storage credits (IESCs), and other commercial contracts).
Ability to align credit markets/requirements/structures with contract structures to complete transactions around varying constraints.
Collaborate with Market Operations team to understand operational risks and upside opportunities of each contract structure and ensure projects can seamlessly move into operational phase
Present and champion contracting opportunities to the Leadership Team and to the Investment Committee (including representatives from the firms owners), providing detailed analysis and strategic recommendations.
Market Fundamentals and Intelligence
Develop, and regularly update, market outlook for storage and storage + projects utilizing 3rd party reports, in-house nodal analytics and power flow models, and other in-house information sources; communicate that view clearly to the applicable team members.
Ensure market information across all areas of the value chain (e.g., development, construction, operations, finance, procurement, etc.) is consolidated to determine a holistic view of the business, and that information is shared with applicable team members.
Complete a commercial competitive analysis of development projects to support bidding and pipeline management activities.
Establish a company-wide framework for how / where we grow the fleet and a target goal for the optimal balance of contracted/merchant revenues.
Collaborate with development, regulatory and market operations teams to align project pipeline with growth opportunities and strategic positioning.
Ability to effectively present and build alignment regarding the commercial plan, strategies, and recommendations to the company's team members, board of directors, customers, and key stakeholders.
As a member of the Leadership Team, work with stakeholders (board of managers, executive team, and leadership team) to develop and meet organizational development goals.
All other duties as required.
Work Experience & Requirements:
Minimum 15 years of experience in power commercial negotiations, ideally including energy storage. Must have deep market experience and prior leadership experience in building and managing commercial teams; executive experience is a plus.
Minimum of 2 GW conceptualized and completed commercial revenue-related transactions.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with and motivate personnel at all levels of an organization;
Deep understanding of company and project profit and loss, pro forma modeling, NPV/IRR analysis, and financing structures
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and executive presence
Bachelor’s Degree is required; an MBA or other advanced degree is a plus.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Strong organizational development and time-management skills
