Role description:

The Site Evaluation & Restoration (SER) team is a specialist business area that investigates, assesses, and manages all aspects of the below ground environment. The team comprises geologists, hydrogeologists, chemists and engineers with supporting field services teams (including drilling rigs, drones and monitoring capability) and complimentary project management, commercial management and development management expertise specializing in all aspects of brownfield regeneration, groundwater resources, contaminated land clean-up and demolition.

As the Business Director for SER, you will be the leader of a flexible workforce of between 275 and 300 colleagues delivering net revenues of £25M pa across all sectors. The team spans the UK and is fully integrated with a global network of over 36,000 Arcadians delivering cutting-edge, innovative solutions to our client’s most significant challenges.

You will guide the Site Evaluation & Restoration business unit with ultimate accountability for revenue and margin delivery; the successful candidate will develop and oversee the implementation of the strategy to ensure quality and safety in project delivery, service excellence and profitable growth within the unit, to support the delivery of the wider business’ objectives.

The team routinely works on major infrastructure, industry and property projects with key focus areas for development including holistic groundwater resource management, inner city regeneration schemes, the management of emerging contaminants (such as PFAS) and embedding Sustainability in all that we do. The team has a clear 2024 plan and strategy, delivery of which is underway; the continued evolution and development of that strategy is a core function of this role.

The leader of this Business needs an instinct on how to prioritise routes to market (directly to client or collaboratively with account leaders or supply chain partners), a strong Growth Mindset and an ability to focus and prioritise the Business’ efforts into high quality safe delivery.

Role accountabilities:


  • Lead, motivate and develop a diverse team of senior specialists by recruiting, setting objectives and reviewing performance to ensure staff are developed, driven and have the necessary skills to deliver the programme objectives.

  • Develop and implement the business plan for SER and ensure the team understand it, and the role that they play in its achievement, through the development of the appropriate culture and the provision of context and clarity.

  • Lead the identification and targeting of clients through the delivery of service excellence to deliver growth in organic revenue in the business unit.

  • Develop enduring relationships with clients and colleagues to understand their business needs and ensure ultimate client satisfaction to improve retention and deliver organic revenue growth.

  • Coach and mentor team leaders and service leaders to ensure all projects are set up for success and appropriate governance is adhered to, to improve client satisfaction.

  • Lead the identification of talent in the business unit in both technical capability and sales, and promote career development by directing individuals who are identified to the appropriate development programmes.

  • Lead decisions on resource utilisation within the business unit and maintain the integrity of the unit composition and pyramid management structure to enable resource optimisation.

  • Lead the identification and management of risk in service delivery and ensure compliance with governance processes in the business unit to lead to service excellence and client satisfaction.

  • Maintain an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of the business unit's clients and the market to identify key trends and emerging opportunities.

  • Develop relationships throughout Our client to foster cooperation and to maximise opportunities to cross-sell and trade-up.

Qualifications & Experience:


  • Have experience of operating at a strategic level and leading a P&L or large and diverse team

  • Have experience of developing and implementing strategy, and developing and taking to market Value Propositions

  • Have experience of working at a senior level with diverse internal and external stakeholders, and evidence of building effective client relationships

  • Be able to establish a strong internal and external network to support the delivery and growth of the business

  • Display first class communication, interpersonal, relationship building, collaboration and influencing skills.

  • Demonstrate ability to drive innovation and a growth mindset culture within a business

  • Qualified to degree level in a relevant discipline or demonstrate significant equivalent experience.

Chartered with a relevant professional organisation.
