Job description
The Engineer III – Energy Storage Engineering is responsible for engineering and technical support for all phases of the project, including project development, proposals, contracting, design, construction, and operations phases of utility-scale energy storage projects.
Requirements:
Provides technical support for project development, proposals, and projects under construction, including high level electrical design, system physical layouts, balance of system and equipment specification and creating CAD drawings.
Leads support from storage engineering on assigned projects and initiatives.
Completes most tasks with limited supervision using defined templates and processes.
Coordinates project execution tasks, including owner interface.
Contributes to standard process, procedure and template development.
Reviews engineering deliverables.
Provides input to contract exhibits.
Holds responsibility for identifying and communicating project risks.
Performs calculations to demonstrate system sizing and performance capabilities using defined processes and templates.
Reviews request for proposal documents and project technical specifications to understand project requirements.
Evaluates project requirements to inform system design, equipment requirements, cost estimating, project risk, site feasibility, and operational requirements.
Develops specifications for purchase of battery energy storage equipment using standardized forms.
Completes battery energy storage system design and design optimization using standardized processes and tools.
Produces and document battery energy storage system configurations based on project requirements.
Generates system design quantities to support estimating.
Generates system design drawings, including facility layouts, equipment arrangements, system architecture, etc.
Leads technical interface with equipment suppliers and communicates project requirements through standardized request forms.
Collaborates with internal engineering and communicates project requirements through standardized request forms.
Communicates design information to construction management, development, estimating, and engineering teams.
Interfaces with design managers, electrical engineers, civil engineers, SCADA engineers, and CAD designers for guidance on preliminary designs and deliverables
Reviews equipment/technologies over a broad range of technical disciplines including batteries, HVAC systems, fire safety systems, electrical infrastructure, balance of systems equipment, and non-battery energy storage technologies.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree Electrical, Mechanical, Chemical, or Systems engineering, or equivalent is required.
Master’s degree in electrical, mechanical, Chemical, or Systems engineering or equivalent is preferred.
4+ years of relevant experience is required.
A valid driver's license is required.
Ability to travel 5-15%.
Advanced level experience/knowledge in:
Utility-scale power/energy systems o Writing specifications o Battery system design
Intermediate level experience/knowledge in:
Electrical system design o Microsoft Excel
Electrical, civil and structural design
Construction practices and methods
Project execution, budgeting, and schedule
Safety evaluation
Basic level experience/knowledge in:
Control systems
Utility photovoltaic system design
Operations and maintenance
Root cause analysis
Oral and written skills to include:
Technical writing
Ability to communicate issues to peers and people leaders
Clear and concise writing
Lead meetings
Present design details through meetings, presentations, and design documentation.
Ability to perform accurate and rigorous engineering evaluation and calculation to support projects.
Effectively use logic, data, problem-solving tools, and analysis to understand and develop solutions.
Ability to work independently and maintain a schedule for key deliverables.
Strong interpersonal and team skills
General understanding of equipment/technologies over a broad range of technical disciplines, including batteries, inverters, HVAC systems, fire/life safety systems, electrical infrastructure, balance of systems equipment, solar PV, and non-battery energy storage technologies.
