THE OPPORTUNITY:

The Company has grown an extensive development pipeline of wind, solar, and energy storage projects across North America. Our client have an impressive 1GW operational portfolio as well as a further 3GW at varying stages of development through the US.

The Director, Transmission & Interconnection will have a strong background and deep understanding regarding transmission systems and interconnection processes. The Director will oversee transmission and interconnection activities from a commercial and technical perspective for utility-scale wind, solar and storage projects within select US power markets. In addition, the individual will take a lead role in identifying optimal strategies and assessing locations for interconnecting projects to the electric grid based on congestion and curtailment potential, interconnection costs, system impact assessments, real-time and day-ahead energy pricing, and market delivery options, and will support the company’s transmission-related project development, acquisition, and operational activities.

THE ROLE:

  • Lead all transmission and interconnection commercial activities for the company, including:
  • Oversee generator interconnection processes for wind, solar, and storage development assets
  • Plan and execute engineering activities in support of interconnection processes
  • Manage relationships and interactions with the ISOs and RTOs throughout the lifecycle of a project
  • Provide strategic and technical input in support of project development, acquisitions, and financings, including sourcing, reviewing and commenting on independent transmission assessments
  • Support and provide input for greenfield development and M&A due diligence, including:
  • Provide input into company growth strategy through knowledge and analysis of transmission market knowledge
  • Identify available transmission capacity at specific grid interconnection points and estimate potential network upgrade costs
  • Review and/or perform transmission assessments to determine commercial viability of potential projects
  • Evaluate historical and long-term transmission congestion and basis for projects under various offtake structures
  • Maintain knowledge of relevant ISOs and RTOs, including:
  • Market policy and rules with respect to transmission and interconnection
  • Current and future generator interconnection process status and timing
  • Current and future major transmission upgrades
  • Generator additions/retirements
  • Support operating projects transmission and interconnection issues as they arise
  • Support concurrent, multiple projects across different regions
  • Manage or lead interaction with a team of internal and external resources

THE INDIVIDUAL:

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in electric transmission planning and analysis, generation interconnection, operations, or related discipline
  • Experience running power flow transmission assessments
  • Ability to perform security-constrained economic dispatch (SCED) curtailment and congestion studies and other congestion analyses would be an asset
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university required
  • Strong understanding of the FERC policies and rules with respect to interconnection and transmission planning
  • Knowledge and experience in executing generator interconnection processes, with a strong preference for MISO interconnection
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to prepare both written and oral presentation materials of complex matters in a simplified manner
  • Travel to office locations estimated at six times per year for remotely located worker
  • Vancouver or Toronto preferred if candidate is Canadian resident
