Job description

​I am thrilled to be supporting my quickly growing client on their search for a CFO.

The company is a rapidly expanding solar developer that owns and operates utility, C&I, and community-scale projects. They have projects across the country and are quickly growing their finance team. The company has a pipeline of over 100 MW that will continue to boom over the next few years

This individual will be a member of the senior executive team and work closely with the CEO.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Actively participate in the business and strategic planning process. Provide a source of business and technical knowledge, business decision support, counsel, and financial analysis that will ensure that corporate strategic objectives are attained.

  • Lead the annual financial planning process for the Company. This includes understanding and validating both the operational and sales & marketing strategies, ensuring that the financial plan is linked to the strategy, and effectively communicating the financial aspects of the plan to the senior leadership group, the Board, and investors.

  • Leverage a newly implemented ERP system (NetSuite) to develop and establish a robust process for budgeting, forecasting, and planning that is implemented consistently across the business and provides insight into business and project performance, specifically profitability analysis by business line, project, customer, geography, etc., that identifies key value drivers and helps foster better decision making.

  • Responsible for the monthly operational metric reporting and analysis of the Company’s performance. This includes coordinating close activities, efficiently reporting corporate performance, identifying risks, opportunities, and contingency plans, and communicating results to the senior management team, the Board, and investors.

  • Provide leadership to the business to optimize asset utilization including both project performance and working capital to accelerate cash flow and maximize the return on capital employed.

  • Lead, manage, and maintain financial and accounting policies/protocols, processes, internal controls, and procedures to ensure the overall financial viability of the Company.

  • Proactively manage project financing and banking relationships and anticipate changing economic, regulatory, and/or legislative conditions that may impact the Company’s ability to meet its debt obligation and make necessary amendments if and when necessary.

  • Recommend and implement financing strategies at the project and portfolio level, as well as corporate, including construction financing, senior debt, tax equity, operating line of credit; with stakeholder reporting including loan agreement reporting, i.e. covenant analysis.

  • Participate closely in M&A activities, including identification, due diligence and execution of acquisitions and associated business integration efforts.

  • Manage relations with external auditors insuring the timely execution of quarterly reviews and execution of the annual financial statement audit.

  • Lead a highly effective financial team that delivers value to the organization with expert financial and economic analysis, management of highly effective business planning, and internal control processes.

  • Manage performance, career planning, and succession planning for the finance and accounting departments. Provide ongoing coaching and leadership to these individuals.

Professional Qualifications:

  • Proven and successful finance executive (i.e. over 15 to 20 years of professional experience) with current/prior CFO management responsibility (stand-alone or divisional) with subject matter expertise, including financial planning & analysis and project finance, in a comparably sized or larger clean energy business.

  • Strong technical accounting (i.e. US GAAP and IFRS) and finance background with proven expertise in financial reporting, cash management, as well as hands-on experience producing timely and accurate financial reports and analyses.

  • Expertise in project finance, including construction financing, term debt, tax equity structures and other financing strategies.

  • Proven ability to operate effectively and help a business thrive and improve while carefully managing cash flow, effectively leveraging the balance sheet, optimizing working capital management, and servicing/reducing debt.

  • Strong commercial acumen with a demonstrated understanding of business drivers and a track record of serving as a key business partner to the leadership team. A proven track record of working closely with line executives to identify and drive significant, sustainable improvements to the business.

  • Thorough working knowledge of U.S. GAAP, IFRS, SEC rules and regulations, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance and internal controls. Particular expertise in tax partnerships.

  • Current/prior experience managing a private equity-sponsored portfolio company, especially with a successful exit (i.e. IPO or transaction), is highly desirable.

  • Experience creating and managing financial and operating metrics for management and other stakeholders, including lenders, private equity sponsors, and regulatory agencies.

  • Prior experience structuring and negotiating credit agreements and partnering with lenders.

  • Participated in successful business and functional integration activities, including the merger of tools, resources, processes, personnel, and culture.

  • Savvy and capable technology skills, including excellent proficiency utilizing MS Office suite (i.e. Excel, PowerPoint), database applications, and ERP systems.

  • Proven leadership skills to lead, recruit, retain, and motivate a high-caliber professional team, including the ability to train and develop skill sets to continuously upgrade and improve best practices, resources, and tools.

Education:

  • Must possess a four-year undergraduate degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.

  • Graduate or advanced-degree in one of the aforementioned fields is highly desirable.

  • A Certified Public Accountant certification (CPA) is preferred, but not a prerequisite.
