Energy Strategy Director
Job description
Our client is seeking an accomplished Energy Strategy Director to lead the development and execution of a pan-European energy and decarbonisation strategy across a significant real estate and infrastructure portfolio.
This is a newly created, senior leadership position that sits at the intersection of sustainable strategy, real estate, and infrastructure delivery — requiring both the commercial acumen to shape long-term energy transition roadmaps and the technical credibility to drive their implementation.
The postholder will operate at an executive level, engaging internal and external stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions, whilst providing authoritative direction on energy procurement, distributed generation, on-site renewables, and whole-life carbon performance.
Strategic Context
The organisation manages a substantial and growing portfolio of assets across Europe, with material exposure to energy cost volatility and increasing regulatory pressure around Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions. The Energy Strategy Director will be instrumental in shaping the organisation's response to evolving energy markets, grid decarbonisation, and ESG commitments — ensuring competitive positioning and long-term value preservation across the portfolio.
This role demands someone who can bridge strategic vision and hands-on delivery: comfortable presenting to C-suite and Board, whilst maintaining deep technical oversight of generation assets, PPAs, and energy services contracts.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy & Leadership
Define and own the pan-European energy strategy, aligned to corporate net zero commitments and sector-leading ESG targets.
Lead organisational energy transformation — steering decarbonisation programmes across the full asset lifecycle from development through operation.
Represent the organisation at senior industry forums, regulatory consultations, and with key institutional stakeholders across European markets.
Build, lead, and develop a high-performing, multi-disciplinary energy team with presence across key European territories.
Energy Procurement & Commercial
Oversee corporate energy procurement strategy, including renewable PPAs (on-site and off-site), VPPA structures, and flex purchasing arrangements.
Provide commercial and technical assurance for major energy contracts, ensuring value, risk allocation, and alignment with long-term sustainability objectives.
Identify and evaluate opportunities in distributed generation, battery storage, demand response, and emerging energy services markets.
Develop and maintain relationships with utilities, renewable developers, ESCOs, and infrastructure investors to ensure access to best-in-class market solutions.
Infrastructure & Delivery
Provide strategic oversight of the design, procurement, installation, and commissioning of on-site energy generation and storage assets.
Ensure energy strategy is integrated into the full development and asset management lifecycle — from site selection and planning through to operational performance.
Drive whole-portfolio energy performance monitoring, reporting, and benchmarking, leveraging data and technology platforms to improve asset efficiency.
Manage relationships with EPC contractors, technical advisors, and specialist delivery partners across multiple European jurisdictions.
Stakeholder & Regulatory Engagement
Monitor and interpret evolving pan-European energy regulation, grid codes, and incentive frameworks (REPowerEU, EU ETS, MIFID energy market rules, national DSO/TSO requirements).
Engage constructively with DNOs, grid operators, and public bodies to support grid connection strategies and embedded generation programmes.
Lead internal alignment across asset management, development, finance, and sustainability functions to embed energy strategy into business decision-making.
Candidate Profile
Essential Experience
Significant senior experience (typically 10+ years) in energy strategy, decarbonisation, or sustainable infrastructure — ideally spanning both advisory and client-side roles.
Demonstrable track record operating at the intersection of sustainable strategy, real estate, and infrastructure delivery.
Deep expertise in corporate renewable energy procurement, including PPA structures, on-site generation, and energy management contracts.
Pan-European market exposure with the ability to navigate diverse regulatory, commercial, and cultural environments across multiple jurisdictions.
Proven ability to lead complex, multi-stakeholder programmes from strategy through to operational delivery.
Experience engaging at Board and C-suite level, with the gravitas and communication skills to influence senior decision-makers.
