Job description

​An exciting opportunity for an experienced Electricity Networks Design Engineer to join a leading renewable IPP. Your role will be instrumental in supporting the successful development of the existing UK based onshore wind, solar and BESS project portfolio & delivering future growth for the business over the coming years.

Primarily specializing in the development of onshore wind, large-scale, grid-connected solar farms & Battery Energy Storage Systems, you will lead the planning process during the development of projects & evaluating origination opportunities from a planning perspective. The team will be focusing on solar and storage development and secondarily on development of onshore wind, hence onshore wind experience will be viewed positively.

As an Electricity Networks Design Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Working with network modellers to identify opportunities for further project developments, leading pre-application calls with the distribution and transmission network

  • Manage and coordinate the grid connections process for new solar, storage and onshore wind projects from preliminary site identification and through the development process.

  • Taking a lead role in discussions and foster relationships with distribution and transmission network operators

  • Preparation of application documentation and reviewing received offers, providing technical advice to the development and management teams to ensure projects have technically and commercially sound connection agreements

  • Maintaining a network of competent consultants and managing third parties to provide technical grid support services.

  • Work with project management and the business development teams to ensure all engineering factors are accounted for during the development process and determine and optimize grid related financial modelling inputs for ongoing projects and acquisition opportunities.

  • Support project tendering, reviewing documentation and providing input at the concept design, detailed design and construction phases to ensure successful project delivery

  • Develop ICP tender documentation to be issued for each connection type and assist in the assessment of ICP tender proposals

  • In the project construction phase, support the construction team by co-ordinating and witnessing testing activities, analysing plant performance, and working pro-actively with distribution and/ or transmission network operators to resolve issues while also maintaining compliance and Grid Code requirements.

  • Representing the business in the UK, professionally, establishing and maintaining good relationships with stakeholders.

As an Electricity Networks Design Engineer, you will likely have the following skills and experiences:

  • Be a self-motivated team player with great communication skills and a structured way of working.

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in UK Electricity Distribution & Transmission Network Design and ideally utility-scale renewable power generation design.

  • Strong technical knowledge of electricity networks including UK Grid Codes and relevant ENA Engineering Recommendations. Able to communicate complex and technical information and concepts to non-technical third parties.

  • Knowledge of HV electrical equipment, control systems, SCADA, protection, and metering.

  • Knowledge of the DNO/ICP process for embedded generator connections in the UK.

  • Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation with respect to electrical systems.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.
