The Green Recruitment Company has partnered with a leading independent developer and owner of advanced energy systems that is looking for an experienced Electrical Engineer to oversee their Engineering Department. The Director of Engineering will help facilitate innovations to help achieve the company's mission to accelerate the energy transition to a 100% carbon-free electric grid deliberately and profitably through sustainable, accessible energy storage development, deployment, operations, and optimization.

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Engineering Department is responsible for a wide array of activities centered on the design,

optimization, and growth of a portfolio of projects with an emphasis on maximizing project profitability, reducing operational risk, promoting electrical grid resilience, and advancing the global transition to clean energy generation. The selected candidate will be responsible for leveraging their specialized engineering and technical expertise to realize these goals, with a specific focus on energy storage assets.

The successful candidate will have proven experience working in complex organizational structures which have undergone rapid growth and transformation, or alternatively will demonstrate an ability to adapt and thrive in such environments. This position is best-suited for an ambitious, self-motivated, and career-focused individual with Electrical Engineering experience who is seeking an engaging role with exposure to the quickly evolving energy storage industry.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manage external Engineers of Record, technical consultants, and major equipment suppliers to advance projects forward. This includes running regular meetings with all contributing parties, performing quality assessment on deliverables, and coordinating with internal teams to ensure compliance with project requirements and design.

  • Review all deliverables from EoR, consultants, and major equipment suppliers to ensure compliance with company specifications and best practices.

  • Be the point person for all engineering questions that arise during the engineering design, construction, and commissioning process of projects.

  • Travel to sites in construction is expected. This will be to attend regular construction meetings and track construction progress

  • Provide technical leadership for design, execution and operation of ESS projects including but not limited to technology selection, ESS performance matrices, monitoring, IA and PPA negotiations.

  • Develop conceptual project designs which comply with key stakeholder requirements. This includes developing single-line diagrams and general arrangements, constructability reviews, for new energy storage projects as well as coordinating necessary deliverables with interconnecting utilities. Requires the evaluation and selection of key project equipment and components.

  • Support in major equipment procurement processes by creating equipment specifications and reviewing bids and associated deliverables from OEM’s. Major equipment including generation step-up transformers, circuit breakers, control house, switches, batteries, inverters, and transformers.

  • Select and manage engineering consultants, manage relationships and workload to ensure critical engineering and project development milestones are met.

  • Ensure project design compliance with key agreements, such as project leases, interconnection agreements, local, state, and federal environmental permits, power purchase agreements, etc.

  • Assist with external stakeholder relationship management when required, including partners, governmental authorities, regulatory agencies, landowners, etc.

  • Support intra-company teams in project planning, proforma financial model inputs, contract negotiations, and respond to other requests for information as required.

  • Assist in developing key project equipment and engineering specifications that reflect the company and project-specific requirements and best practices.

  • Organize and maintain critical project resources on SharePoint and other cloud storage platforms as needed.

SKILLS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s or graduate degree in Power/Electrical Engineering or similar discipline if/where applicable.

  • At least five years of experience within the electric power industry. Battery storage experience is a preference.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to manage vendors and teams while also performing required tasks.

  • Proficiency with data analysis and reporting.

  • Strong organizational and time management skills.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Effective at communicating technical topics to non-technical audiences.

  • Prior experience in developing and maintaining written reports, operational metrics, and key performance indicators.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 applications.

  • Some travel required.

  • Job Location: Chicago, IL preferred.

ADDITIONAL SUCCESS FACTORS

  • Familiarity with energy storage technologies and applications

  • Licensure as a Professional Engineer

  • Self-motivated with an ability to own and lead resolution of difficult issues with a sense of urgency

  • Ability to both manage short-term request and longer-term projects

  • Experience with CAD and/or GIS software
